LiDAR point cloud density calculator

Estimate points per square meter, point spacing, and whether an object at a given range will get enough returns for reliable detection — using your sensor’s real firing rate and field of view.

Sensor configuration

Scenario

Point density at range
0
pts/m²
Point spacing at range
0
cm
Points on target
0
Point cloud pattern on target (approximate)

Approximation using uniform angular spacing and small-angle geometry, assuming a flat target facing the sensor. Real sensors have non-uniform vertical spacing and range-dependent noise — verify against your exact datasheet before finalizing hardware selection.

Why point density matters

A LiDAR’s raw specs — beam count, rotation rate, points per second — say little on their own. What matters is how many of those points actually land on the object you care about, at the range you care about. Too few points on target and an object becomes a handful of ambiguous returns instead of a classifiable shape. This calculator converts your sensor’s angular resolution into that practical number.

This is the same tradeoff covered in the sensor fusion and BEV perception articles below — point density at range is one of the core inputs into how reliable a fused perception stack can be.
